Joining and playing on a private server is the easiest thing to do and I'm here to show you how it is done.I am sure you might have read the news of Nostalrius returning if you haven't here is the link:
Blizzard Announces World of Warcraft Classic, Official Vanilla Server. This had better work on my PowerPC Mac. Otherwise it's not really the vanilla WoW experience. I have played some on. Top Vanilla classic wow private servers list supporting patch 1.12.1. It's the first and the smallest World of Warcraft version to play up to level 60.

Some things to note:
- Below I will discuss how to play on the new Nostalrius relaunch/Elysium private server which runs on wow client version 1.12.1 / 1.12.2 for a perspective the current wow version is 7.1.0.22. There are many other servers running TBC, WoTLK and MoP but this post is about Vanilla (Classic WoW).
- People choose to play on older version of WoW for various reason, some like it because it brings back the nostalgia, some like the balance of that patch, some want to experience what vanilla wow was all about, while some like to play without having to shell out money for a sub every month. The server we are talking about here Nostalrius/Elysium is completely free to play with no p2w elements like cash shop whatsoever.
How to Download and start Playing on the new Nostalrius/Elysium server:
1. First, you want to download the old client (1.12.1 / 1.12.2) for WoW
WoW (English): Torrent | Yandex Disk | Mega Disk | For Mac OS
GoogleDrive: https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B3z1W5l02...t=download
Mega: https://mega.nz/#!jssk2TYL!fRdZ4LmqCeNUY...xMy9ayGFtc
WoW (Русский): Torrent | Google Disk | Yandex Disk
WoW (中國): Mega Disk | Google Disk | Yandex Disk
WoW (Français): Google Drive | Mega Disk
WoW (Deutsch): Google Drive | Mega Disk
These links are taken from the official site of Nostalrius/Elysium https://elysium-project.org
Extract the zip file to Desktop or somewhere else.
2. Next, Create an account on https://elysium-project.org/control Use the login information when you start the game once the server launches (Elysium/Nostalrius Release Date - 17th December 2016).
3. Now, just download this small config file provided by the server http://valkyrie-wow.org/files/realmlist.wtf
This is the file that directs the client to the login server. So to speak. it tells wow where it needs to connect and to what server in this case the elysium server.
Or just use notepad to open realmlist.wtf file in the downloaded folder and change the contents inside 'set realmlist logon.elysium-project.org'
Where to find realmlist.wtf ?
If you extracted the zip in desktop just go to desktop folder and find the folder World of Warcraft replace the realmlist.wtf file with the one you downloaded
Some F.A.Q:
- Will it interfere with my Legion WoW in any way?
Not at all, this is a separate version of wow, launch this with the exe provided inside the World of Warcraft folder you extracted. And if you want to start Legion wow launch it using battle net - Will I get banned on Retail wow for playing on private server?
No, unless you are dumb enough to boast or advertise a private server in trade chat/forums of official wow. Blizz has no way to know if you are playing on pserver - If I want to play on other servers will the process be the same?
Yes, as long as you have the correct version of the game, just change the realmlist.wtf file with the details provided by the private server of your choice and start playing. Here is a list of private servers I compiled detailing all the current active and populated private servers for various versions of wow from classic to WoD. - If I played on Nostalrius earlier will my account be back and I can resume from there?
Yes, the new Nostalrius server (Elysium) will have complete database of all characters that played during Nostalrius and will be restored as it is without losing any progression. - Is the date for Nostalrius announced?
Elysium/Nostalrius Release Date - 17th December 2016 - Will the new Nostalrius/Elysium be taken down as well?
You have to understand that Nostalrius chose to abide by Blizzard's C&D letter and take down the server it wasn't forced to do it. Pservers get C & D letters all the time that have much larger population than Nostalrius eg: Warmane, Wow-Circle which just choose to ignore them and are running fine since 2009. The new admins of Elysium said they weren't going to give in to C & D threats so you can be sure that server is going to last for however much time you want to play.
Good luck on your journey, if you want I compiled a list of 12 addons that are essential for playing on Vanilla private servers you can download.
Still confused on what class to play on Elysium? Check out my guide on which class to pick on Nostalrius/Elysium Server Launch

Nostalrius was a private World of Warcraft server, which opened on February 28, 2015. The server ran Patch 1.12, catering to aficionados of the early version of the game, nicknamed 'Vanilla'. Stating breach of copyright, Blizzard Entertainment issued the administrators of the server a cease and desist letter, and so the Nostalrius server was shut down on April 10, 2016, leading to outcry on Facebook and Twitter and large-scale coverage in mainstream computing journalism.
It was one of the most successful private servers to date with over 800,000 accounts registered. Since the conclusion of Nostalrius servers, a discussion about the possibility of Blizzard opening official 'Legacy' servers has begun.
Discussion of legacy servers[edit]
One of the biggest discussions on legacy servers came out of the entire Nostalrius issue. A petition on Change.org received over 280,000 signatures pleading Blizzard to hear the voices.[1] Many famous Youtubers have made videos on this very topic discussing the pros and cons of Legacy servers, and it managed to get the attention of one of the original designers of World of Warcraft, Mark Kern, who supports the idea of Legacy servers. Blizzard Entertainment was silent on the issue until April 25, where the lead game developer responded to the discussion.
Blizzard's response[edit]
On April 25, 2016, J. Allen Brack responded to the Nostalrius discussion. He spoke of the possibility of 'Pristine' realms, with many of the new features turned off, to make leveling harder, and social interaction more prevalent in the game.[2][3]
On November 3, 2017, Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Classic, an official 'vanilla server', in response to the popularity of Nostalrius and other similar private servers.[4] It was released 27 August 2019.
Further developments and the return of Nostalrius[edit]
After a month or so of large scale protests, Blizzard invited the Nostalrius team to the Blizzard HQ to present the case for Vanilla. An eighty page 'post-mortem' document describing the development of Nostalrius, the problems that happened and some marketing strategies was presented to Blizzard, and after some time, released on the Nostalrius forums. In the following six months, Blizzard did not respond at all to any communication from the Nostalrius team[5] Allen Brack and the World of Warcraft development team announced they would not be making any statements about Vanilla at the 2016 BlizzCon convention.[6] Consequently, the Nostalrius team released their source code to Valkyrie-WoW, another long-standing private Vanilla WoW server, hosted in Russia, and the Nostalrius servers returned on December 17, 2016 under the name of Elysium Project, with the player database as it had been just before the shutdown in April.[7][8] In October 2017, the Elysium servers were taken offline when it had been revealed that some staff had been involved in gold selling and character manipulation, which went against the 'Blizzlike' philosophy the team purportedly stood for.[9] The servers returned one month later, with the project rebranded as Elysium Project 'Nighthaven'.[citation needed]
WoW Classic and ties to Nostalrius[edit]
In an interview published on November 4, 2017 by Eurogamer, J. Allen Brack said and they would welcome the involvement of Daemon and Viper, the leads of the Nostalrius project in the production of World of Warcraft: Classic.[10] However, at BlizzCon 2018, developers Brian Birmingham and John Hight stated that there were no members of the Nostalrius team working on WoW Classic.[11]
